Manufacturer Provided Description
The Catalina 36 successfully combines luxurious accommodations, a workable deck plan. and outstanding performance under sail.
The hull is efficient and stable with graceful lines and has been designed with enough volume for spacious accommodations.
The rig is powerful but still easily handled by a short-handed crew. The rudder is a balanced blade with a long horizontal skeg molded into the hull, for a light helm and good tracking ability.
The decks have molded in bulwarks and non-skid. The side decks are wide and carried well aft for easy access to the cockpit even with the optional dodger in place.
Forward is a large anchor well with an anchor storage rack built in and double anchor rollers
There are two opening hatches on deck and six opening ports plus the main hatch for lots of light and air below. Two dorade-type ventilators insure ventilation even in inclement weather.
The interior has been designed to accommodate an active family or up to three couples in comfort and three-cabin privacy
The main cabin is big and open. Cabinets and shelves surround comfortable seating for group entertaining. A unique feature is the dinette table on the starboard side, perfect for a game of backgammon or chess while supper is being prepared.
Mealtimes and food preparation are an important part of any cruise and this has been reflected in the attention given to the galley design.
There is a very large ice box with removable shelves, and a separate fiberglass-lined dry food storage locker. The stove with oven is gimbled and provided with potholders and a safety rail. A choice of fuels is available.
A double stainless sink, ample counterspace, storage and fluorescent indirect lighting complete the galley and make it a pleasant place to work.
Opposite the galley is a navigator’s desk with chart storage, and drawers.
The 12 volt and 110-volt panels are located above navigator’s desk with space provided for repeater instruments and stereo equipment
The unique aft cabin is furnished with a settee to starboard, a hanging locker, and a double bunk on the centerline. There is an opening screened port aft for light and ventilation. Another double cabin is forward. The V-berths are oversized with full sitting headroom and reading lamps over bunk. There is plenty of room for dressing and large hanging locker. Lots of drawers and bins have been provided for extended living aboard
The head is forward and to port. Mirror finishes and crisp white laminate trimmed in teak create a bright airy feeling. There is a seat for the shower area and teak grate sole with integral shower sump below.
Engine and mechanical installations have been carefully planned to facilitate owner maintenance. The engine is accessible when the fully insulated engine hatch is removed. The fuel filter, pumps and fittings and tanks are readily accessible.
An engineered structural system with stainless steel tie rods and molded structural hull liner insure the Catalina 36 is as rugged as she is beautiful.
The accommodation plan of the 36 is designed to reflect the needs of the sailing family who has learned how to enjoy their leisure time afloat to the fullest.
Owner’s Notes
We are selling the boat because I am 79 years old and not able to move around on deck to raise, lower, and trim sails like I once could, so we are moving up to a boat with more assists like electric winches, bow thruster, and windless. I am OCD about mechanical issues, so I cannot rest until they are fixed. That said, the only problems of which I am aware are a bent pulpit rail (bent when we bought the boat) and a defective bilge pump switch in the shower. Also, at 21 HP, almost all C36 MKI owners agree that the engine is under powered. This is sufficient for getting in and out of slips and cruising at about 7 kts at 2400 rpm. It helps to have a clean bottom and that the prop and the rest of the running gear be kept gunk-free.
